Curriculum
We aim to offer a rich and diverse curriculum at Hemington Primary School. We have fully embedded the National Curriculum and have a range of enjoyable topics taking place across all year groups.
We teach the clarinet in Music to children in Year 5 and 6 and French to all children from Year 2 to Year 6. All of the children have access to ICT and this is delivered through all the different subjects (using our range of laptops and ipads). The classroom teaching and learning is further enhanced by interactive screens which are used by the teachers and the pupils. In addition, we ensure all of the children have a rich and broad curriculum, which is centred on developing and acquiring new skills through a variety of subjects, such as; Science, Geography, History, Design and Technology, Art, PE, RE, Drama and PSHE.
We teach Letters and Sounds to all children in our EYFS and Year 1 class.
All classes have five lessons of Maths and English each week.
Writing is taught using the 'Talk for Writing' approach which develops children's writing skills through a oral based approach routed in language acquisition.
The curriculum is enhanced further through residential trips in years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. These trips give the children valuable learning experiences which can be used back in school; in addition they also help year 6 pupils develop the resilience to transition into KS3. In addition to residential trips, we offer an extensive range of day visits to places of interest throughout each year. Although the school does not have a hall onsite, we are able to offer opportunities to use PE and team building skills in the locality including Outdoor Learning in the wood/Forest Schools.
The children have opportunities to develop dance and drama skills with an external theatre company and put on productions in outside venues at least twice a year.
The school is placed in a close knit community and has good relationships with local amenities e.g. Lockington Village Hall, St Nicholas Church Lockington and Castle Donington College.
