 Scales Fur and Feathers newsletter

Our topic this half term is called Scales, Fur and Feathers .
” The children will be learning all about different types of animals and how to group them based on their features. They will explore the characteristics that make mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish unique, and learn to describe animals by their physical features such as fur, feathers, scales or fins. We will also be finding out what different animals eat, identifying whether they are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores. Through hands-on activities, sorting games and observations, the children will develop their scientific vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the amazing variety of animals in our world. We are also excited to kick-start our topic with a visit to Manor Farm next week.

We are excited to share all the amazing things happening in Class One this half term.

Stay tuned for updates, announcements, and important information via Facebook, Seesaw and the school newsletter.
Let’s make this Autumn term a memorable one!

Challenge at Home

The idea behind this homework is that you and your child will have a go at things together and record what you have done on paper or digitally via Seesaw. You can choose any way that you would like to record your experiences, for example, you can use pictures, photographs, writing, cartoons or you could stick any souvenirs in your book. You can also choose the order in which you complete the challenges.

Please don’t worry if you do not get chance to complete all of the challenges, they are designed for you to pick and choose which activities you would like to do with your child and that fit around your family life. We do hope that you can complete as many challenges as possible so that your child can share their successes. The children will have chance to share their work during the topic during our speaking and listening sessions.

We hope that you enjoy helping your child with this exciting project.

How To Support Your Child At Home

The most important way you can help your child is to show an interest in what they do at school, ensure they attend regularly, eat a nutritious breakfast and get plenty of sleep. You can really help your child by talking to them about what they have done at school but some children are more forthcoming than others.  To help you support your child, our class pages have an overview of what your child will be learning each term as well as ideas to help specific to their class and topics.

Weekly spellings are uploaded to Seesaw for the Year 1 and 2 children, to be tested on a WEDNESDAY. Please take a look at these each week and help your child to spell the words independently.
Homework Challenges — Please use this to access the homework and spellings online. Each child will receive a homework challenge menu. There will be enough tasks to complete at least 1 per week based on our topic. You can choose any way that you would like to record your experiences, for example, you can use pictures, photographs, writing, cartoons or you could stick souvenirs in your book. You can also choose the order in which you complete the challenges. Please don’t worry if you do not get chance to complete all of the challenges, they are designed for you to pick and choose which activities you would like to do with your child and that fit around your family life. Each week we will choose a selection of work to be presented to the class to develop social and communication skills. We do hope that you can complete as many challenges as possible so that your child can share their successes with their peers and school staff.
Timestables Rockstars – All children in Year 2 have a TTRS login. We recommend that the children use TTRS  for a few minutes each day, as little and often is much more beneficial to the children retaining the knowledge they gain, than once a week.

Reading

Picture
Please ensure that your child’s reading book and diary comes to school every day. Please remember to write in your child’s diary every time you read with them. We very much value your support in listening to your child read. Sharing books together is a fantastic way to nurture positive reading habits. Bedtime stories where you model the reading is hugely beneficial.

High quality phonic teaching is the prime means by which we teach children how to read and spell words.
At Hemington Primary School, we follow the ‘Sounds-Write’ phonics programme and this guide is designed to help you, as parents or carers, to understand ‘Sounds-Write’ so that you can support your child at home.
