PE

At Hemington Primary School, we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We want to promote a positive attitude towards an active and healthy lifestyle. We intend to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. It is our vision that all children succeed and achieve their full potential and be provided with opportunities to develop their physical competence and confidence. We aim to ensure all of our children leave primary school with the passion, knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to equip them for lifelong participation in physical activity and competitive sport.

Implementation

PE at Hemington is delivered by a sports coach.

We aim to ensure that our PE lessons are engaging, allowing children time to discover, play and spend time in a task when learning a new skill, as well as being progressive in order to challenge every child to fulfil their unique potential. It is essential that children go through the process of attempting, failing and being successful  to build resilience and determination to achieve personal challenges.

Our children have the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities planned and delivered by our specialist sports coach. We provide challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure. Children in Key Stage 2 access a whole term of swimming lessons to ensure that they meet the minimum standards at the end of KS2. We also offer the enriched experience of Forest Schools for all children where they can try out their own ideas, take risks and explore. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Lunch time sports clubs are available each day and children can attend after school sport clubs. Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children. Each year a small group of KS2 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time clubs and our annual Sports day.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE. Children at Hemington Primary School make good progress in PE and are eager to attend after school clubs and competitive sports events.
